Sound Off: Fruut – “Sippin’ Vinegar”

For someone who has never stepped foot in Philadelphia, I have a perplexing obsession with the city. Although I hope that at some point this changes and I can find time to visit, I’m pretty content just claiming Gritty as my spirit animal for the time being. With this in mind you can imagine my excitement when I stumbled across Fruut while diving down an Instagram black hole.

Fruut is a musician / producer creating a captivating lofi / indie pop sound with their music that I just can’t seem to get enough of and continue to find myself returning to. The stripped down yet interesting instrumentation combined with their laid back vocal style creates an aural space that seems to just make time move a little more slowly and brings your mind immediately to a more relaxed state. This space is captured perfectly in the Fruut’s most recent single “Sippin’ Vinegar”.

Lyrically the contents appear to be related to self discovery and affirmation in a struggling relationship. Although not an entirely unique lyrical concept to the genre, the lyrics are presented with a combination of interesting phrasing and time which sets them apart. There is something about this bundled with the conversational vocal stylings and laid back music that makes the song feel simultaneously relatable and personal to the listener which I really enjoy.
