In a time when breakfast has fallen to obscurity and is is hazily replaced with $15 avocado toast and bottomless mimosas it’s easy to forget about the joy a simple family owned doughnut shop can bring. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problems with some good brunchin’ on a Sunday morning and I have certainly found the bottom of the so called “bottomless mimosa” on several occasions. But Sometimes it’s just nice to take a break from all that charade and sink your teeth into something more simple.
Rose Doughnuts is a small little doughnut shop here in San Diego that I can whole heartedly say from which I have never left with an ounce of disappointment. It’s so good that I am even willing to toss my irrational hatred of business that are “cash only” out the window (but fucking seriously guys it’s 2018, get it together).
Every time I come in I am always greeted with a smile and the typical “Welcome to chain restaurant, what the fuck you tryna get today!?!” attitude is nowhere to be found. My personal go to move is the Sunrise Bagel Sandwich On Everything. It simple, but always delivers. You can upgrade it to a combo with coffee and a doughnut for a $1.50 but I never do because I prefer to wast my extra caloric intake around the corner at Ballast Point. That said at a total cost of $4.70 for the combo maybe I’m just being an idiot and the jokes on me.
If bagel sandwiches ain’t your thing there’s also a huge selection of your classic mom and pop doughnuts, bagels, as well as they have breakfast sandwiches and croissants. Honestly there’s something here for everyone. That said it is pretty small, so I’d recommend leaving your brunch crew at home… plus fuck Becky anyways, she’s so god damn loud. “Yes Becky we can all hear you, the whole fucking restaurant can hear you, its just no one cares…”
